The Patrick Kavanagh Rural & Literary Resource Centre, Inniskeen nestles among Monaghan’s rolling hills, which have long been an inspiration for legends and a home to poets and which proved such a rich source of inspiration for one of Ireland’s best loved poet’s - prompting him to ‘dabble in verse’ haven’t changed since Kavanagh’s time, providing the perfect backdrop for a weekend of literary activity in which celebrated author Anthony Glavin will direct participants.
This short-story workshop is designed for those who want to try their hand at short fiction or have just begun. Structured around on-site writing exercises, examination of one or two classic short stories, and discussion on various elements of fiction, from language and setting to characterisation and theme, the workshop will also look at the various “seeds” of fiction and the importance of finding your own voice.
Director: Anthony Glavin
Anthony Glavin served as editor of ‘New Irish Writing’ in the Irish Press from 1987-88, and as commissioning editor for New Island Books from 1994-2004. Author of a novel, Nighthawk Alley, and two short story collections, One for Sorrow and the Draughtsman and the Unicorn. His stories have been anthologised in Phoenix Irish Short Stories, Best Irish Short Stories, and Short Story International. New Dubliners: Stories to celebrate 100 Years of Joyce’s Dubliners and the Faber Book of Irish Short Stories 2006/7.

M1 Dublin to South Dundalk
Follow the Carrickmacross R178 for approximately 5 miles. At Channonrock junction (Conlon’s pub) turn right for Inniskeen.
N2 from Dublin
Exit Carrickmacross. Left along R178 to Essexford. Left at Kelly’s pub for Inniskeen.
From Belfast to Dundalk bypass via Newry
Exit for Dundalk town centre. Follow the Carrickmacross R178 for approx. 5 miles. At Channonrock (Conlon’s pub) turn right for Inniskeen LP1140

Course Fee €100
The price includes all tuition, lunch and refreshments.
Accommodation can be arranged in local quality B&B’s. A separate charge will apply.
