National
Patrick Kavanagh Day 2008
Sunday, 20th July 2008
'Commemorate me where there is water'
Mid July each year is the date set for the National
Patrick Kavanagh Day.
Sunday, 20th July 2008 is the date for this year’s
Readings.
If we reflect on Kavanagh’s artistic journey,
one of the most important, illuminating moments occurred for
him by the banks of the Grand Canal, Dublin in mid July, 1955
as he recuperated from his lung operation. His poem beginning,
‘O Commemorate Me Where There is Water’,
explicitly outlines the way he wanted to be remembered. This
commemorative event was inaugurated in 2004 and since then has
been gathering momentum throughout Ireland.
The specific details of time and location of
the event are flexible and at the discretion of the organizers.
The important thing is that Kavanagh’s poetry belongs
to everyone and that each County gets an opportunity to be part
of this special national event.
