A Thought for To-day

Sunday 7th March 2010  -  Third Sunday of Lent

Bearing Fruit in God’s Name I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down. Luke 13:8-9  During Lent we have a special opp0rtunity to take a close look at whether we are living as disciples of Christ. Traditionally, we concentrate on those aspects of our lives that are interfering with our relationship with God. What sins, addictions or distractions keep you from following Jesus? What should you cut out 0f your life so that you may bear fruit? What ought you give up? Another approach is to nourish and cultivate those areas of our lives that seem to be bearing fruit already. How are you already following Jesus? Do you feel close to him when you pray but don’t make much time for it? Do you appreciate God’s presence in nature but hardly ever go outside? Do you experience God’s love when you spend time with family but find yourself spending more time working instead? How can you be more responsive to God? Lord Jesus, help me to bear fruit in your name. Karla Manternach.

The Garment of Suffering and Explanation…. Each one of us has some amount of suffering or hurt in our life, which dates from our past. The Garment of Suffering symbolises the hurt that is contained in our lives and community. During lint we ask that your bring to the Church a piece of cloth (any colour) about four to six inches square and leave it in the basket. Your piece of cloth can represent the pain, grief or hurt in your life. It may be associated with: Grief at death and separation; Pain of living with an alcoholic partner, parent or child; The pain of sickness; the pain of being misunderstood; the pain of failure, etc. Or whatever you feel. Before Holy week the cloths will be collected and sewn together into one complete garment. On Good Friday after the Venerations of the Cross the garment will be draped over the Cross and left there throughout Easter. At Pentecost the garment will be removed. During Lent and Easter, we will pray to be healed. What is unique about this ritual is that you will be able to recognise your own piece of cloth, your own grief and suffering and yet, understand that so many others share the same worry. Please feel free at any time during the coming weeks to place a piece of cloth in the box in the porch.

Trócaire would like to thank everyone for their huge generosity to the Haiti appeal.  Donations from the Irish public have surpassed all expectations - ROI: €3,486,815 and NI: Stg £979,643.  Thanks to this support Trócaire will help thousands of survivors to rebuild their lives in Haiti. However, this Lent Trócaire reminds us that, while earthquakes and natural disasters attract global attention, there are millions of people around the world who will go to bed hungry tonight. During Lent over 600,000 children will die from hunger and diseases caused by hunger. The total number of people that were killed by the recent earthquake in Haiti, is less than half that number. This hunger crisis is taking place away from the TV cameras and global attention, in small, rural villages all over the developing world. Please support Trócaire’s Lenten campaign this year in whatever way you can, to help families overcome hunger.
